New Recruits

Wanna Play Roller Derby?

You provide the gear, we provide the training to turn you into a Louisville Roller Derby Player! Our New Recruit Session welcomes any person (age 18+ and whose gender identity conforms to the WFTDA gender policy) that has an interest in learning about Roller Derby. We welcome recruits of all shapes and sizes to try our New Recruit Session and see if Roller Derby is right for you. Want to learn how to skate so you can be a Referee for the sport? Then this is also the place for you!

While no experience is needed to join our New Recruit Session, please remember that Roller Derby is a full contact sport. You will be expected to work hard and in close proximity to other skaters. Roller Derby practice will incorporate drills that focus on strength training, cardio, high intensity interval training (HIIT), and more. Some training will be exclusively on skates, while some will be off skates.

LRD highly encourages interested recruits to develop some form of regular fitness routine prior to and during your time in the New Recruit Session to get the most out of your time with us. Please refer to your doctor or physician for assistance with developing an appropriate workout plan that is right for you.

Most importantly, visit your local roller rink and start skating!

2023 New Recruits
"I was anything but a proficient skater when I decided to join LRD’s New Recruit Session-- the last time I was on skates was probably somebody’s ninth birthday party. I was intimidated showing up to my first day of boot camp, but it turned out to be one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. I was one of the least experienced skaters there, but nobody made fun of me. Nobody counted me out. The LRD community has been so patient and welcoming both on and off the track. With hard work and a lot of help from my amazing teammates, I’ve become one of the latest recruits to pass assessments and join the team. It hasn’t been easy; I’ve had to put in a lot of hours both on the track and extra workouts off. Not to mention the mental effort I’ve spent trying to replace “I can’t” in my vocabulary with “I haven’t yet.” The learning experience and the wonderful community of badass women I’ve gained has made it all worth it: every early Sunday morning, every sleep-deprived Tuesday at work, every weird fall, and all of the sore legs in the world are worth it."
